THE POSIDONIA

"You dance,
 You breathe,
 You Cherish,
 You remain,
 You Survive,
Furrowing your sky we will protect you"

With these words Ibiza Diving Cruise wants to present his first contact for those who dont know the essentiality of Posidonia and still see it dance for many years.

You breathe:
The Posidonia liberates 20 liters of oxygen per day per m2 of prairie, being the cause of the excellent quality and transparency of our waters.

You Cherish:
The Posidonia is a refuge and breeding grounds for a great life of our deeps: fish, octopus, cuttlefish, shellfish, ...

At the same time Posidonia consolidate our deeps and acts as a main protector of our beaches in winter storms through the stratum of the dead leaves that sit on them. The good health of the Posidonia maintains and grows our beaches. The disappearance of one meter of Prairie can lead to the disappearance of several meters of beach due to the erosion phenomena of the storms .

You Remain: The Posidonia only found in the Mediterranean, lives between 1m and 30m deep occupying an area of ??3% of the Mediterranean basin which equates to about 38,000 km2, being a key in the marine species ecosystem.

You Survive:
The Posidonia is being threatened by a mismanagement of the environment and the emergence of tropical species accidentally released into the Mediterranean with rapid growth and are gradually supplanting Posidonia. Highlighting threats:

.- Contamination is very sensitive to pollutants.
.- Malpractice in water sports: Damage due to anchors, oil spills, detergents, paints, solid waste, ...
.- Coastal construction works involving the installation of drains that release sewage into the sea, increasing water turbidity and hindering photosynthesis.
.- Construction of dams and other barriers that affect the rate of sedimentation in the sea.

The posidonia prairie is the "climax community" of the Mediterranean, which represents the highest level of development and complexity that an ecosystem can achieve. It is, therefore, one of the most important ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea, so which has been classified as "priority habitat"

IBIZA AND FORMENTERA, WORLD HERITAGE

ibiza and formentera world heritage

During the 23rd session of UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Morocco from 29 November to 4 December 1999, Ibiza, based on natural and cultural criteria, was declared World Heritage. Nature Ibiza’s marine component is characterised by the presence of dense and very well preserved prairies of oceanic Posidonia (seagrass) and coral reefs. The oceanic Posidonia beds at the Marine Reserve are the best preserved beds in the Mediterranean basin. The island's seabed contains the most diverse community of Cladocora caespitosa, supporting 220 species, the highest record for a marine community in the Mediterranean. This community offers protection to three globally endangered species such as the Mediterranean monk seal.
